On December 8, Google announced that it is developing two distinct categories of AI glasses: one equipped with a display and the other primarily focused on audio functionality. Google stated that the first co-developed AI glasses will be launched in 2026.

Google will also collaborate with the Chinese AR company Xreal to create a standalone pair of glasses, codenamed "Project Aura," which will run the same Android XR system and operate without the need for a smartphone, though it will require an external battery. On the same day, Google also announced several software updates for the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, including a "Travel Mode" that enables the mixed-reality device to function normally in moving environments such as cars or airplanes.

Research firm Wellsenn XR predicts that annual sales of AI glasses will exceed 55 million units in the next decade and reach an astonishing 1.4 billion units by 2035.
